Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

About

MRI uses radiofrequency waves and a strong magnetic field to create very precise images of the inner structures of the body. There is no radiation with MRI.

Exam Preparation

Below are some of the exams performed here and their required preparation. If your exam is not listed or you have further questions please contact us for guidance.

  • MRCP (Magnetic Resonance CholangioPancreatography)

Nothing to eat 4 hours before your exam.

  • All other MRI exams

No special preparation required.

If your renal (kidney) functions are compromised then you might be required to have a lab test before your exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long does it take for an MRI?
A. The MRI exams usually takes between 20 and 60 minutes.

Q. What should I wear to my MRI appointment?
A. Please wear loose comfortable clothing without metal such as zippers, snaps, buttons, hooks, underwire or bra hooks. We do have hospital gowns and scrubs that you can change into if necessary. A dressing room with a locker is also available to secure your belongings.

Q. What do I do if I am pregnant, is MRI safe?
A. Currently we scan pregnant patients only when it is considered medically beneficial. Please discuss the risks and benefits with your provider.

Q. How do I get my MRI results?
A. The radiologist will read your exam and a report will be sent to your referring provider within 3 days. Your doctor will discuss the results with you.

Q. What if I feel anxious or claustrophobic?
A. Please speak with your ordering provider. In some instances a patient may require oral sedation. A prescription order must be obtained from your ordering provider prior to you MRI appointment. The MRI department does not prescribe oral sedation medications. If you require an Open MRI please contact MRI scheduling for a referral to an off-post facility.

Q. Do I need to bring anything with me to my MRI?
A. Please bring a CD with you of any previous x-rays, ultrasounds, CTs or MRIs of the body area that we will be imaging.

Q. What if I have metal implants?
A. Metallic devices may prevent you from having an MRI. Please inform the scheduler or the technologist prior to your exam if you have a pacemaker, pacer wires, aneurysm clips, implanted stimulators or pumps, inner ear implants or embedded metal. Documentation is required to determine if your implant is compatible with the equipment.

Once Inside

MRI is located on the ground floor level in the radiology department, which is next to the emergency department. Patients can park in parking lot F Monday – Friday (just past the emergency room entrance), enter through glass doors at the central entrance, and turn right into Evans Hospital. Take another right and you will see radiology is near. Visitors requiring MRI should proceed back to the MRI (follow signs), there is a kiosk in the MRI waiting area for check-in. Note: The central entrance is closed on weekends. For Saturday and Sunday appointments please arrive at the main entrance on the west side of the hospital.
