Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I walk in to be seen in General Surgery?
A. No, patients need to be referred to the General Surgery Clinic by their Primary Care physician.

Q. How long does it take my referral to be processed?
A. That depends on the type of referral that you have. Some health problems are considered more urgent than others, and will be scheduled accordingly. Your referral could take 24 hours to 28 days to be processed. Usually, Tricare will call you to schedule an appointment when your referral is processed. If you don’t hear from Tricare within 28 days, you should contact Tricare to check the status of your referral.

Q. How do I get an appointment to be seen for Bariatric Services?
A. Patients who are interested in Bariatric/ Weight loss surgery need to get a referral from their Primary Care physician in order to be seen in the General Surgery clinic. The Bariatric Coordinator who evaluates you in the General Surgery Clinic will determine if you are a candidate for Bariatric Surgery.

Q. Can I check on the status of my family member’s surgery?
A. The General surgery clinic is where surgeries are scheduled and you will be seen in this clinic prior to and after your surgery. However, surgeries are performed in the Operating Room and the front desk staff, here in the GS clinic, do not have specific patient information regarding patients who are having surgery. According to patient privacy laws, hospital staff is not allowed to give patient information over the telephone.

Q. Why do I have to wait to get an appointment with a surgeon?
A. Each surgical intervention is different and has varying degrees of urgency. We do our very best to triage our patients appropriately, and see patients as soon as space is available.

Q. Who should I talk to if I have questions after my surgery?
A. Upon discharge from the hospital, each patient is given a set of discharge instructions. Please refer to these instructions. If you are having a problem or a question that is not covered by your discharge instructions, please call the General Surgery clinic (719) 524-4166. If it is after hours and you feel that you cannot wait until the next day, please go to the Emergency Department for immediate care.
